We all know the earth is big, about 8,000 miles across. But how big is that, exactly? Can you picture 8,000 miles? And we also know that the sun is bigger than the earth… MUCH bigger. But how much is “MUCH”? And what about distances? Does the solar system look anything like the model that used to hang over your crib?

This short segment was designed to answer a few of those questions using a balloon, a pencil, and the sidewalk. It was produced in collaboration with Dr. Gerald Wheeler, former Executive Director of the National Science Teachers Association.
